One of the most enjoyable parts of your adventure is the scenic drive from Sacramento to the Delta. As you transition from city streets to rural landscapes, the scenery shifts dramatically. The route along Highway 160 unfolds with winding roads framed by vibrant greenery and stunning river views. This picturesque drive sets the perfect tone for a memorable day.
Breathing in the fresh air while taking in the breathtaking sights is just the beginning of what awaits you!
Start your journey with the Delta’s Bourgeoning Wine country
It doesn’t take you long to reach the wine country Sacramento river about 10 miles south of Sacramento. You will start to hit the first vineyards. This is the area that has been developed in the last 20 years, although some wineries date back much further than that. Known as the Clarksburg AVA it is a region of wineries known for grapes that produce outstanding Chinon Blanc. The combination of rich soils found next to the Sacramento river and abundant sun have made for some outstanding wineries. Look for an upcoming blog from me with a lot more detail about the various wineries… I just have to get out there and go to them all! We’ll keep you posted….Meanwhile here’s just one of the many charming towns you will find in the Delta and it’s only about 20 miles from Sacramento…. let’s look at historic Clarksburg.
The historic farm community of Clarksburg
Founded in 1858. Clarksburg is a small community but as you wander it streets, you find that it has a sense of community. It has a local library and three lovely schools. Nothing like wandering around the campus of a small high school to get a sense of the community. Clarksburg started its life as a large holding of primarily crops like hay and wheat. It then transition into orchard properties with large Edwardian farm homes where fruit such as pears were grown. Now it has joined the explosion of wineries in California and almost everywhere you look there is a vineyard. Unfortunately one thing Clarksburg does not have is a huge choice of restaurants. So we decided to pursue one of our other passions which is seeking out the next great American family made hamburger.
And you can certainly get a good one at Dinky Diner right on the levee overlooking the Sacramento River. The Dinky Diner definitely lives up to its name. It’s basically a food cart with permanent outdoor seating and a very rustic bathroom! But the view is worth the price of the burger and the burger was pretty good. I got a cheeseburger combination, including a nice size order of fries And a bottled water for $14. My husband went a little bit more upscale with a double cheeseburger that ran him about $18. On a scale of one to ten tomatoes I give it about a 7.5 which isn’t bad considering that it’s in a small hamlet and it’s a food cart!
